Religion

“Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion . . . Why don't we celebrate living, instead of worrying about damnation and sin?”
-- Ed Schempp, acceptance speech as Humanist of the Year, awarded by The American Humanist Association, 1996

Ed Schempp was sucessful in his suit to stop mandated Bible readings in school. His birthday is the 29th of Feb. More should be written about this man.

United Way

Yep, its that time again. I hate the United Way. I hate that my employer takes it upon themselves to "encourage" my charitable giving to the "correct" charity. Let's take this point by point.

1) Its none of my supervisor's goddamn business what my charity is. None. Its not his bosses or anyone up the food chain all the way to the publisher. MYOB you rat bastards.
2) Supervisors at the paper get a cash bonus for the level of employee participation. Isn't that money better given to the charity instead of the supervisor? Yep, I thought so.
3) There's not one Scandinavian based charity to choose from. Why the discrimination? What about "my" people?
4) There's also not one Atheist non profit to choose from. Again, why?
5) The United Way supports religious discrimination. How? By supporting the Boy Scouts, who ban Atheist children from membership.
6) The United Way has a drug/sex scandal that's pretty recent. Just what I want to support.
7) Oh, and did I mention that my employer/bosses should mind their own fucking business?

Entries in a cat's diary:
Day 183 of my captivity ... My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant. Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Must try this at the top of the stairs.
In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. Must try this on their bed. Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear in their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan.
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. She speaks with them regularly. I am certain she reports my every move. Due to her current placement in the metal container, her safety is assured. But I can wait; it is only a matter of time.

Pitchers and Catchers

The long baseballess time is almost over. Pitchers and Catchers report within a couple of days. The brightness of life returns.

Todd in charge

I gave Todd E administrative rights to the blog so he can spend some of his free time putting on some bells and whistles. I'd like a blog roll so you all can see some of my current faves. Let's ride Todd's ass if he sags on the job.

Shamed

I worked a day of OT with Todd E and he pointed out that it has been almost two weeks since I've blogged. He rode me like a mule about it, though he doesn't have much room to talk as he bloggs every quarter or so. He's also gone over to myspace and has really sold his soul.

1) There was a missed call in the Super Bowl that cost me $720 in a pool. I had the Steelers with 1 and the Seahags with 4. The penalty in the end zone that cost the Hags a TD and they settled for a FG would have made the final score 21-14. And I'd have had the right numbers and got a payday out of it. But.........DENIED!

2) I was driving to work on yet another OT shift about midnight and saw what looked like a big cat cross the road in front of me. I slowed down and noticed it wasn't a cat, dog, nor a possum. It was a big raccoon that loaped across six lanes of empty road without getting hit. He was a big 'un. I would have felt bad if I had hit him, he would have been poor and flat Rocky Raccoon.

3) Speaking of Todd, he blogged one of the pictures of Muhammed that has all the radical Islamics all riled up. The chickenshit paper that we work for won't print it, so it falls to the bloggers in America to exercise the freedom of the press. I don't see what the big deal is, our press and media mock God and Jesus all the time, what makes Muhammed exempt from the same satire. It is a rule for the Musilms not to show Muhammed, but how does that apply to the rest of us? What a sham.

4) I've got the Beetle in the shop. The 100k serivce is running at least $3300. That and the tires are another $700. Ouch and ouch again. The 50 mpg is good and all but the gouge in the service of the diesel really pisses me off. I'm going to go over the bill point by point, that's for sure. One example is a thermostat is $155. Not $15 like it should be, but $155. Jesus, is it made of gold or what?

5) One other financial surprise this week is that we found out that we make too much money to take the full write offs for the condos. Any other kind of deduction would have been ok, but because they're real estate losses, different rules apply. We're talking at least $28k of write offs and $8k in money coming back. Hell, if we can't take the losses, we're going to sell the condo and invest in a RV lot instead. Our Christian leadership sure doesn't make it helpful to get married and where's our tax cut? Nowhere to be found.

Ranting over for now

Walking

I've been walking at lunch for the last month. I can't say the weight is dropping off or anything, but I do feel a bit better, not so much like a lard ass. I had to cut tonight's walk short, as there was a skunk out on the parcourse. I saw him come out from behind a tree and walk along the inside fence toward the railroad tracks. He disappeared into the darkness. I couldn't see the risk of taking one for the team.

AMC Sucks

I worked yet another OT shift Monday night, and got home after 11pm. I got in bed and turned on the TV. Lo and behold, Animal House came on AMC. It is one of my favorite movies ever.
Watching it on AMC was a huge disappointment. The film is rated PG and they still cut the hell out of it. Many of the best one liner were lost to the cutting room floor. How sad that at midnight we still have to have so much humor censored.
I'll add that Sandra accused me of having a sophmoric sense of humor, though she phrased it a bit differently than that. My reply was, "and that's a problem?"
