Gas Used To Be This Cheap

An old sign off US-395. Poached from Pashnit.

Its All About The Money

The State of Arizona is implementing a heightnend "speed enforcement" program which is in fact a revenue enhancement program. According to The Newspaper (here), the State is looking to issue 1 million speeding tickets at $165 each. One thing different here is that the tickets won't count as points on your driving record.
Which goes to show the truth of the matter. Its not about safety or enforcement, Its all about raising money without raising taxes. What a scam.

I'm Outta Here

Tonight is my last night of work for16 days. With Mallory making it so far into the playoffs, my vacation plans are in flux. At first, I was taking my parents to Red Bluff for a few days. We were going to tow up the bikes and my dad and I were going to go for a couple of rides. Then, I was going to visit an old pal, John B and his family, who live in Shasta County. That was the first week. If the Sunshine's team wins in West Sac, I'll cut the Red Bluff trip down by a few days and driver her and my parents up to Vancouver WA to watch the next round of playoffs. So either way I'll spend a few days with my parents and let them try our RV'ing for the first time.
The second week's plans were to go to the timeshare in Palm Springs. I had planned on bringing the golf clubs and playing in the heat for a week. If Clayton Valley continues to win all its games, then they will be playing in Oregon for the national title, as I understand it. That may be a bit presumptive and I don't want to Bill King them.
With all of that said, blog posting may be a bit sparce until the first week of August. Come back occasionally while I'm gone to see if I've managed to make it to the library or not. And, as usual, thanks for making my blog one of your stops on your internet journey.

The Sunshine Wins Again

I took a call from the Sunshine and Clayton Valley beat Manteca 15-10. She got to play first base and bat twice. Tomorrow's game is at 4pm. If they win two more games they go to Washington. Lose two and they go home. They're in the driver's seat.

Vega Burnout

OK, let's see if this works. Here's Bret doing a burnout in his bad ass Vega

Bret's Cool Vega

I can't get youtube to behave, so the clip of the burnout will have to wait a bit. But, here's a few pics of Bret's cool Vega. He put a blown, stroked and bored 454 in an early 70's Vega. About 10 years ago he let me drive it in the industrial area around the plant. Way cool.

$8.55 A Gallon In Alaska

Wow. Here's the link to a Yahoo story about gas costing this much in a remote village in Alaska. Gas goes on two barges and an airplane before finally getting to the customer. Ouch.

Super Sized RV

Here's one of the largest rv's around. It even has a roof pop up, which I haven't seen before. Look at the Class 8 tractor you need to pull this bad boy around.

Like This Is A Surprise

“In the early days of woman-suffrage agitation, I saw that the greatest obstacle we had to overcome was the bible. It was hurled at us on every side.”

Can Anyone Show Up For Work?

I don't know what it is about Saturday mornings but yet another one of the employees here was a no show no call for his shift today. And, he did the same damn thing about 6 weeks ago, I remember taking the call. Though this champion of the crew isn't on my direct crew, I still have to try and get someone to come in and cover his shift with no notice and how many people keep their phone on in the middle of the night?
Is anything going to happen to this guy? Do pigs fly?

Clayton Valley Won Tonight

The Sunshine's team won 8-0 over Linden (east of Stockton). Linden got one hit. The Sunshine started at first base, played a few innings and got two at bats. They play Red Bluff tomorrow at 11:00. Not to be presumptive or anything, but I assured the Sunshine that if her team won state, I'd change my vacation plans and drive her to Washington state for the regionals.

Only I Hurt Myself Playing Golf

Damned if my knee doesn't hurt from last week's golf. Its not the walking, as I use a cart these days. It bothered me for a few days but had gotten worse. It doesn't hurt to walk, but to get up out of a chair hurts like hell. I think I pulled or strained something in the knee. I dug up a brace and have been wearing it for the last few days and its getting a bit better. Of course its not bad enough to take off work or anything like that, which is a shame.
Back in the day when I had just moved to Stockton, I had gone golfing on my day off and walked the course. I don't know what I did but my ankle couldn't support any weight and I ended up missing a few weeks of work while my chiropractor worked on the ankle.
Its not like golf is a contact sport or anything, maybe I'm just a pussy.

The Truth From Sean

"...in every religion the priest insists on five things -- First: There is a God. Second: He has made known his will. Third: He has selected me to explain this message. Fourth: We will now take up a collection; and Fifth: Those who fail to subscribe will certainly be damned."

Robert Green Ingersoll

I poached this quote from Sean's blog. I like point 4 about taking up the collection. Its always about money. And sex. And power over others.

Another Winning Representive Of God

I haven't had any priest bashing on the blog for a while, so here's a winner who attempts to molest a girl on an airplane. The airline crew moves the girl to another seat and this champion of God goes over to her and asks for forgiveness. I guess I'll never get an answer as to why God allows such asshattery amongst his direct representives.

I Suck

I forgot to credit Grant for the panda pic. He sends me some pretty good shit.

I Was Hoping

Between the approval of continued domestic spying and the faith based bullshit, well, might as well vote for Bush again. I really thought this guy was for change, what a sucker I am. Thanks to emawkc for the pic.

Not Where I Ride

Isn't this an awful lot of skin to scrape off if you fall?

Pandamania

I've gone to the San Diego Zoo twice to see the pandas. They just sat there and looked right back at us. The docents have you be real quiet as to not disturb them. That, and one of them took a poop. What a highlight.

I Love Snakes And Church

I saw the link over at Reed's. A Kentucky pastor was arrested for illegal snake trading. Snakes use in their religous services. Here's the link to the story. And, here's the quotes out of the Good Book for using serpents in their services.

Luke 10:19, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

Mark 16:18: “[The saved and baptized] will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.””

Today's Golf

Today's outing was at Sunol, at the Palms course. I got there without too much time to spare and didn't get loose. It showed on the tee shot that I topped and hit about 10 yards down the fairway, to the ladies tee. Outstanding!
On the second hole I took an 8 and 4 putted. OK, all this fun for $35. The rest of the front was nothing over 6, three bogies and two pars in a row. There we go, now we're cooking with gas. I took a 49 on the front with 17 putts, in spite of the 4 putt on 2. I made a few poor shots but didn't make more than one poor shot on any hole. This showed me I can play reasonably consistant.
After parring 10, I took the gas the rest of the way in. I only managed one bogie and shot an 8, 9 and 10 until I parred 18 with a nice 15 foot putt. Ugh, back to this shit again. I shot 59 on the back with 19 putts and another goddamn 4 putt (taking an 8 on a par 3. That bites donkey dick). I shot 108 and posted 107 with 36 putts.
Still, I hit the driver well 11 out of 14 holes, so there was a bright spot or two today.

The Sunshine Is An All Star

This season, Mallory's team won the league. And, she made the all star team. She's one of 11 girls on the team. We went to watch the second round of the playoffs last Sunday in American Canyon. They played a team from Dixon and it was a close game when Dixon came storming back in the late innings to tie the game up at 8.
Then, Clayton Valley put a 9 spot on the board to win the game and stay in the winners bracket. Tonight's game was a rematch against Dixon and the good gals won 15-2 in a 4 inning game, shortened due to the mercy rule.
So, Mallory's going to the state finals in Sacramento next weekend. I can't go Friday or Saturday, but unless they lose two in a row they'll play Sunday and we'll make the drive up together. I'm putting off going on vacation by a day so I can have Sunday freed up to go.

A Good Quote

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes"

Cesare Beccaria-18th Century Italian Criminologist

This was in a letter to the editor in the Merc yesterday.

I'm Not Happy

Bluntly, I'm taking a 9% pay cut next month. My health insurance and pension is not through the company, but through the union. We get paid x dollars per hour and we divert y dollars an hour to the pension and z dollars an hour to the health insurance. When the health insurance goes up, we vote to contribute more to the plan to keep our health insurance. We also divert more money to the pension, usually when we get a raise. So, I make so much an hour (and that's none of your business) but I'm compensated that much more to go into the two plans, health and pension.
At the union meeting this week we were told our health insurance is going up 30%, so we have to contribute more than our pay raise to cover the added costs. Let me add here that we have great insurance. I don't have a co pay for visits or prescriptions. And, I have decent dental and good eye coverage. But, we pay top dollar for this.
We could have taken a cut in coverage, paying a $10 co pay and lessened dental and eye. By vote, we decided to take the 9% pay cut and keep the top tier coverage. By a landslide.
I didn't go to the meeting but I would have voted for the lessened coverage. My boy Todd has an alternative view here.
I use a HMO, Kaiser Health. My plan doesn't change no matter what health coverage we would have chosen. So, I'm taking a 9% hit for what is no difference in health coverage and minimal changes in dental and eye. I am pretty goddamn unhappy about this. 9% is not chicken feed.

And, I had one of my crew not show up again for the 6th time this year. That's 6 times I can think of. Her shift starts at 11 and she calls me at 11 to tell me her car won't start and she's getting a jump from AAA. OK, I can live with this. She promises me she's coming in. About a half hour later, her sister calls me to tell me she's left for work. Of course she never shows up. I held one of my early guys to cover the work so I wasn't short handed. But, that's not the point.
Then, I hear her dog got out and that's why she wasn't at work. Then, when I get to work today I hear she was in a car accident. OK, what's the real story? Dead Battery? Lost Dog? Car Crash? Or just another bullshit story? I hate getting lied to. If you're not coming in, just tell me the truth.
And, why did this employee even get 6 chances to not show up for work? Tell me, faithful readers, at your work how many times can you not show up for work and keep your job? At Sandra's hospital, if you're a no show they call the police to come out and check on you, and they assume you've quit. And, that's after one no show. 6 fucking times. I've had a timeclock job since the weekend I turned 18 and I'm 47. I've never, and that's NEVER, not shown up for work without a phone call. One time at the alarm company I overslept and came in late. And once here at the Merc, and that's in 21 years, I overslept and got a call at home. Once. In 21 years.
On top of that, I had another guy not show up for his job on time. He was 75 minutes late without a phone call and I put him down as a no show and asked my supervisor to suspend him. I called this guy today and he told me he showed up but "couldn't" call. Then, it was "someone at the branch should have called."
Y'know, its not a union issue. Its easy to fire someone in a union enviroment. All you have to do is document transgressions and use due process and you can get rid of any of your fuck ups.
When I told Sandra all of this when I got home, all she said was "why aren't you going to work at Safeway?"
I told her that we wouldn't have matching days off and I wouldn't have 5 weeks of vacation off ever. Besides that, I drove home wondering why I still put up with this stupid shit. I like my job and I'm good at it. But, some of this stupid shit is exasperating.

A Good Article On Marvin Miller

Here's a short article about Marvin Miller, the man who single handedly made the MLBPA (the pro baseball players union) the strongest union in the country today. I can't think of the name of his autobiography, perhaps Mark can chime in with it. I borrowed it from Mark and its a great read, especially for a pro unionist like myself. He's a great man and a national hero. And, in the article he says he doesn't believe in an afterlife. What's not to like about this great American?

Gangs In Avalon

Here's a good article that Charlie sent me from officer.com about gang activity in Avalon, on Catalina Island. In our visit last May, we didn't see any grafitti, nor did we see a heavy police presence. We did see more deputies on Memorial Day Sunday than we have any other day we've been there, but it was the holiday weekend and the island was pretty full. Still, what a shame that the gang life has come to such a nice place to visit.

No Shit

"Photo enforcement has lost every time the question has been put to a vote of the people."

I got this quote from The Newspaper and it certainly is a no brainer. Who in thier right mind would vote for red light cameras?

Two Good Quotes

I got two good quotes out of Cynthia Tucker's column (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) that was reprinted in the Chronicle yesterday.

"a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime" Adali Stevenson 1952.

"Never mind that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissident, rebellion and all around hell raising remain the true duty of patriots." Barbara Ehrenreich

Today's Golf

After not playing for a few weeks, I joined up with the fellas at Sunol today. We played the Cypress course, the shorter of the two at Sunol. There's a heat wave in Northern California and it ended up being over 100 degrees today. What great prep for the impending trip to Palm Springs.
I played well on the front, shooting 48 with only 15 putts. Though I three putted three holes, I one putted 4 holes and putted in from off the green on 9 for a zero putt. And that was for par no less!
I only had one bad hole on the front, taking a 7 on a par 4. So, two pars and three bogies led to the 48.
The back wasn't as good as the front. I took an 8 on a par 4 and two 7's on the par 5's. But, I did make par with a 12 foot downhill putt from off the green and bogied three more holes to shoot 51 on the back and that's 99. Breaking 100 is always one of the primary goals and that was done today, which brightened up my disposition in the club house when I was drinking my O'Doul's.
You read correctly in the first paragraph. We're going to Palm Springs in the heat of July to stay at the time share Sandra has. I plan on playing golf at least 4 days of the trip. Back in the day I have gone to PS and golfed every day, two rounds a day in the heat. One of the days I golfed three full rounds and played well all three rounds. You may think I'm crazy, and you may be right. But, I've been on the course when I'm literally the only one on the course and I can knock off a round without rushing a single shot in about 2 hours. Golfing heaven.
Come August, I'll have lots of golf for you faithful readers to get bored about.

Another Biohazard

Sandra and everyone went to Laughlin NV for the 4th of July weekend. I had to work and couldn't go. She texted me today that the kids pool at Harrah's was closed for 24 hours due to a "biohazard." Someone pooped in the pool and its closed during the 115 degree weekend. And, Harrah's doesn't let you swim in the river on the private beach after 7 pm. And its still hot as hell. I wouldn't be happy without a pool to swim in.

I Can See This

I saw this on Fiery's blog. The link to the Australian newspaper story is here. I guess a 16 year old kid was arrested for wearing this in public in Australia. Arrested for "public nuisance." Australia doesn't have the same free speech protections as we do here in the US. The article is worth a click.
Now, if I were 16, I'd have worn it to school. Hell, if I had one now I'd wear it out in public.

I poached these from Nightmare. He's got a couple of pretty good jokes on his blog as well that are worth a click.

This Is Me

I truly have been touched by His Noodly Appendage.

This Kills Me

At the A's and Raider day games, the seagulls come by about 4pm and wait for the crowds to leave before feasting on the leftovers. They come by the hundreds and get pissed if the game goes into extra innings or OT.

Not Paying Attention

Look at the skid marks. Right off into the shit. Way to go!

My Next Job

Painting naked girls is certainly on my list of "next jobs" once I leave the Merc. The model is totally naked (except for the shoes) in the top pic, her "clothes" are all paint. Thanks to Grant for some of the best pics he's sent me.

An Interesting Test

I saw this test on T&A's site and had to take it myself. Here's the link. I can't really disagree with the results, I think I'm more of a liberatarian than conservative and am mostly middle of the road about economics. Notice nobody above is in my quadrant.

Total Health Coverage

Poodles linked to Atheist Revolution here about a great way for comprehensive health coverage for all Americans. I like this idea.

A Really Nice Caddy

With SH-299 and SH-36 closed west of town, and SH-299 closed for a while east of town as well, our riding was drastically curtailed. We went out for a short ride a time or two and on one of them we rode out Churn Creek Rd to Anderson.
After getting a snack at Sonic, we got back on the scoots and noticed this really nice Cadillac. The top pic shows the proud owner of the car, the old scrapper in the cowboy hat. He caught me taking pics of the car and we talked about it for a few minutes. Its a 1964 vintage car.
The owner told me it was fully restored and he drove it all the time. It took him 15 years to restore it and he loves it, says it drives like a dream. If I won the lottery I'd have a car like this.

That's pretty much it for the pictures and the trip. We spent more time in the pool that on the scooters due to the fires.
Finally it was time to come home. Of course we had to make another "10 minute" stop at Rolling Hills Casino, just off of I-5. I parked the rig and Sandra went right on in as I went over to check out the adjoining rv park and talk with the camp host. Sandra came out in a hurry and she was not happy. I took the rv to the golf course clubhouse to go inside and ask about the John Daly designed course. Meanwhile, Sandra darted back into the casino for one last crack at it. She came out shortly after I was done at the golf course and instead of another Walk Of Shame, she pulled out $600 for her $100 investment. Whoo hoo! So again, we hit the road like bank robbers and drove home.

Cry Me A River Casino

After our visit to the dam we drove into and through town, heading south on Old US-99/SH-273. I figured Sandra was up to pull a few slot machine handles so I appeased her by steering us to Win River Casino.
For Sandra, it was Cry Me A River Casino as she got one winning pull for her $67 worth of losses. I took the top pic to show the dedicated motorcycle parking right in the front of the parking lot near the entrance. Our bikes weren't parked too long.

Pics From The Dam

In spite of the security measures, we walked out onto the middle of the dam and snapped a few pics. Lake, river and spillway from top to bottom.
