Todd Gets The Mercury Fucking

I've mention my co worker, friend, and generally good guy Todd on this blog a time or three. He's two or three spots behind me in senority and around here you tend to pal up with the guys you came on board with.
When we took over the San Mateo County Times, Todd worked his ass off to get it up to speed. He worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week for a while. After a while, things calm down and Todd gets to work like a regular person.
Here's Todd's post on his blog about how the Mercury eliminated his job after he worked so hard to get it running right. He's not happy and I'm not happy for him. In the last cutback we eliminated 8.4 FTE's (That's Full Time Equivilents, or Employees. 8.4 equals 8 full jobs and two additional shifts)
Give Todd a read and see how our indsutry is in its death throes.

I Want My Anti-God Plate

The State of Indiana showed no spine when they relented on having God on thier car plates. Here's the link. I want my next plate to be GODJOKE or GODSCAM. God forbid the DMV denies my 1st Amendment rights. Besides, you can argue this violated Mat 6 5-6. Like the gal in the pic, they act like the Pharisees.

What The Hell Happened Here?

My #1 xray tech is taking off for a few days over the holiday, so I'm sure she'll check in and let us know what could have caused this painful injury.

No, This Is Not Me

Poached from the sista's.

Pig Sixty-Nine

Don't ask. Just don't ask.

Human Caterpillar

Dropped on my head, I'm sure of it.

This Is Odd

What patriotic picture has the American Eagle in a secondary position to another animal, much less a turkey? Though Jefferson (I think) wanted the turkey to be our national symbol, not the eagle. And, if I remember my FFRF reading correctly, Jefferson refused to issue a presidential "thanksgiving" each of his 8 years in office. Boo rah!

(Upon edit, and thanks to Fiery, it was Ben Franlkin who was pro turkey, not Thomas Jefferson)

Skyler And Grandma

Looks like the baby is passing a brick.

More Kyleigh

I have beautiful grandchildren.

My Two Bonus Girls

Mallory is 13 and Nicole is 20.

KyKy With Holiday Bear

After the pitch a fit, Kyleigh went outside and got the holiday bear we have on the shelf at our front door. She had come earlier to get Grandpa out of bed and she has started to call me "grandpa", or what passes for it out of her 2 year old mouth. We bought the bear at Long's, the local drug store chain that was bought by CVS. I think I'll keep this festive bear out in front all year long, he's under the overhang and protected from the weather.

Happy Skyler

Here's a good pic of the happy baby.

Grandpa And Skyler

Here's a couple of Grandpa and Skyler. Nicole and Sandra got in the middle one. I got to hold Skyler for a good half hour. She's got a calm disposition, unlike her wild child sister.

Here's My Favorite

We took some pics of the babies for Turkey Day. Here's my favorite. Kyleigh is pitching a fit because she doesn't want to pose for a pic, she wants Grandma to pick her up. Skyler is bemused.

Its About Damn Time

Here's a link to The Newspaper that quotes the Treasurer of Arizona as saying that the photo radar plan is an increase in taxes or assessments not passed by 2/3rds of the voters. Hell, its about damn time that someone in government stood up and said what's what.

A Good Quote

Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the boisterous sea of liberty.

— Thomas Jefferson

I got this from a pashnit poster's sig.

Not This Year

No ham this year, Sandra picked up a turkey breast and some trimmings. I'll get out of bed in time to eat and head off to the happy homestead. I think the babies are coming by for a visit, Sandra mentioned the lack of baby pics on the blog of late. I should be able to get that addressed. So, faithful readers, Happy Thanksgiving!

We're In Real Trouble

Tonight I'm setting up for our biggest edition of the year, Thanksgiving. Every year I've worked at the paper, the size of the paper has been 70-84 pages, in bundles of 25's or 30's. There was that much display advertising.
This year, well, its just not the same. We're only 48 pages in bundles of 50. Just another Thursday. My paper, in fact my entire industry is in real trouble. I think after New Year's I'm going to apply at Safeway. The Titanic is sinking and I need to bail.

Another Good Quote

“It is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.”

Thomas Paine (1737-1809), The Age of Reason, I (1794)

From The FFRF

“True virtue is life under the direction of reason.”

Benedict Spinoza, Ethics, 1677

I'm Sure Of It

Of what you may ask? Of being dropped on my head as a child. Because stuff like this kills me.

This Kills Me

If you think that taking 21 shots on your 21st birthday is hard, just remember how hard it was for your 8th birthday.

This Kills Me

I'd Pay To See This

Good looking women in bikinis going at it in the ring. Yep, I'd pay to see this.

A Good Test To Take

I got this link from the Grumbling Old Fart, who is a KC blogger I read. Here's the link. Its a histoy/civics test. I sucked it away and only got 25 of 33. The ones I missed I really didn't know. I never took a civcs class, we had it in 8th grade but I was taking Spanish instead and you couldn't take them both. Take the test and fess up.

This Kills Me

This made me laugh. It must be late. Thanks agaian to Laurie for the poach. In case you don't get it, they're Rock'em Sock'em Robots, a toy some of us had as kids.

This Is Me

Now You Tell Me

OK, which one of these two Norman Rockwell pics is the more realistic one? You goddamn well know its the top one. Thanks to Laurie for a couple of these.

Like I Have $4000 Extra Lying Around

Part of having an rv is running the on board generator every month for an hour or two. This keeps everything lubed and burns moisture off the windings. Its not good for a generator to just sit.
I head out to the coach the other day to run it and it won't start. Hmmmm. I try all the tricks and the starter won't even turn over. The service light flashes three times and that means its time to take it in.
OK, Sandra and I drop it off last Monday. They get to it Wednesday and I speak to someone yesterday. (I'll add here that the generator is made by Onan. Odds are if you buy an rv, its got an Onan)
It turns out that the motor failed. Its "frozen" (the term they used) or "seized" ( my term). Never mind the semantics of it, I'm fucked. They tell me its cheaper to replace the entire unit than it is to tear it apart and fix what's wrong. I remember seeing the Onan for sale at Camping World for about $3100. And that's not including installation at $125 an hour for an all day job.
I get on the net and see that Honda makes rv generators that fit right in a standard application, like I'm hoping mine is. And, they're about $400 cheaper than the Onan. They're also of a more modern design, water cooling and OHC, not the air cooled 1920's technology like the Onan.
I'm not happy with Onan. I only had 170 hours on the genny and they should last THOUSANDS of hours with care. And, I took care of it.
Its almost 5 years old so there's no warranty left. So, I'm fucked.
What this means is that Sandra and I cannot camp without hookups until we replace the genny. And, when we're driving in the warm weather, we cannot run the coach A/C because you run the genny to get the 120 volts to run the A/C. It doesn't mean we cannot camp at all, we can camp and will continue to do so. What I cannot do is drive out to Round Valley and park in the warm weather, run the A/C and watch tv while the genny runs. This disappoints me.
Still, I had though that Onan make a quality genny and mine sure turned into a piece of shit. And, I don't have $4000 budgeted for such a repair. To sum it up, I'm pretty fucking disappointed.

Drop Top Chevy

Here's a cool old car.

5 Wheel Cycle

This is something I've not ever seen before. A 5 wheel motorcycle. It looks like its a modified Honda. I wonder how it rides.

This Is Also So True

And most of them work on my crew.

This Is So True

The Greatest Quote

“I am no Christian.”

Thomas Chatterton, published letter to his family. Cited in A Biographical Dictionary of Modern Rationalists by Joseph McCabe (1920).

Of course this is from the FFRF. I get many of these gems from their daily email. You should already be on the list. Here's the link.

This Kills Me

I think I'll string my holiday lights like this.

This Is Helpful

From The Newspaper.com

>>While Detroit police focused on increasing the number of traffic tickets by 94 percent, every category of serious crime increased significantly. The total number of murders, rapes, robberies, assaults and burglaries increased by 19,370 -- a 56 percent jump -- between 2002 and 2006.<<

Like I've said on this blog before, its not about "safety" but it all about the Benjamins.

Whew!

It always good to find someone with more issues than I have.

A Good Looking Woman

That Scarlett Johansson is one good looking gal. With nice cleavage.

I Can't Hear Shit

This got out on tv live.

I'm Buying Lottery Tickets Today

My cheap ass company does provide us $100 vouchers for safety shoes once in a while. I go to the only vendor today and since I've got Peggy Hill sized feet, they don't have all the styles in stock. But, on the close out shelf they have one pair of size 13's that fit like a glove. Whoo hoo, I'm in like Flynn. And, they cost less than a c note so I didn't have to cough up any money out of pocket.
I'm not usually lucky like that, so I think I need to buy lottery tickets today for tonight's drawing.

This Kills Me

It must be late because this made me laugh out loud.

This Kills Me

Is this why Ronald is always smiling?

I Want This

Do you think Sandra will buy this for me? Actually, it should be a 3-D body pillow. And, there's another million dollar idea.

Old Hard Drive

This is a hard drive by IBM circ 1956. A whole 5 meg. It weighs over a ton. Look at the forklift needed to get it in the plane. Thanks to Grant for the pic.

Oooops

This is why women and handguns shouldn't mix.

Quagmire

Someone put in a lot of work to be Quagmire for Halloween.

Checking Out God's Handiwork

Look at the priest check out this gal's ass. I'd get my eyes stabbed out if I got caught doing something like that. I am a bit slyer than the priest is.
