"Fitch believes more newspapers and newspaper groups will default, be shut down and be liquidated in 2009 and several cities could go without a daily print newspaper by 2010." --Fitch Ratings credit analyst Mike Simonton in report on prospects for the media and entertainment sectors.
I really can see major American cities not having a daily newspaper any more, or any newspaper at all for that matter. I see more and more papers going to less than 7 day a week publication as well. I've been saying this for a few years, that my industry was in trouble. Now, I'll say we're in our death throes.
I read this in USA Today tonight and it surprised me. Its common knowledge that California is the #1 pot growing state in the country. But, can you name the #2 state? I'll leave the answer in the comments.
John Daly's Prevost coach is for sale on ebay. Here's the link. The current bid is less than $400k. New, the coach cost over $1.5 million. And, that's no misprint. Since Daly smokes like a chimney, its gotta smell pretty bad inside. I don't think you can ever get that cigarette stench totally out of the leather and fabric inside.
I saw this on Field of Schemes and couldn't believe it. Fresno has had minor league hockey for over 40 years. Before Stockton got thier own team I made it a point to make the drive to Fresno to watch hockey a few times a year. I didn't realize the Falcons moved back to Selland Arena downtown, after playing at the Save Mart arena on the FSU campus. I don't know if the move had anything to do with attendance falling, but its a shame to see a team fold like this, especially in mid season .
Here's a link to a story about using phony chips at a casino in Missouri. Over 1100 $100 chips were found to be counterfeit. I've wondered why this isn't done more often. When I worked at the alarm company, I went to a call once at a small foundry and they make the metal inserts for casino chips. Now, how hard would it have been to break in, or just make your own. Now that the chips are composite, it seems to me the Mafia would have their hands deep into this. So, what am I missing?
I read TheNewspaper.com on a regular basis and have linked to articles on this very blog. Here's a link to a Maryland story that kids are printing up fake paper plates and putting them on cars, then driving past the photo radar camera. They use the plate numbers of people they don't like and guess who gets the $40 ticket? That's showing initative.
"In celebrating the Winter Solstice, we celebrate reality.”
Anne Nicol Gaylor, president emerita, Freedom From Religion Foundation. Speech written for the 8th annual Winter Solstice Party, New Jersey chapter of FFRF, Dec. 22, 1985. (Freethought Today, Jan/Feb 1986)
And what reason can you give for not being a member?
Satyavati had this on her page and I poached it. I'll assume its in North Carolina somewhere. There used to be a US-666 in Arizona. I remember taking it on one of my bike rides so long ago. I even got off and took video. The highway ended up in Dogulas AZ, on the border with Mexico. Sadly, the bible beaters got their panties in a wrinke and the governments involved changed the highway number to US-191. Wusses.
When I'm not actually running the operation on my dock, I'm sitting in my cubicle either preparing the paperwork for the night's operation, or we're off press and I'm "watching the office" which means I answer the phone and deal with anyone who comes by for a car, extra papers or whatever. The first thing I do is turn on the wifi we have hooked up to the mainframe and I put on my Yahoo Launchcast streaming music. What I like about this is you rate songs, albums and artists. So, if you put a little time and effort into it, you can have thousands of songs rated, like I do. After a while, pretty much only good songs, albums or artists come on that you've rated highly. Its pretty cool having a custom radio station. Costs about $30 a year or so. Well worth it to me. Oh, and there's no advertisements. Its commercial free. Yesterday I get an email from Yahoo stating that the Launchcast is going away, to be replaced by on line CBS radio. Free, but ad supported. And, the "your station" feature is going away. Goddamn it. One of the few pleasures of life here at the homestead and Yahoo is fucking with it. No station anywhere is going to play WASP, Dwight Yoakam, Royal Crown Review and Dice Clay all in a row. Only my station does that. This irritates the shit out of me.
This blog is for me (Joe) to keep in contact with my friends and family who I don't see too much of because I work nights. If you're wandering by checking out the blog from the Internet, well, you're welcome too, I'm 50 years old and live in California. I'm married with two bonus daughters and three grandchildren. I write about sports, scooters, vacations in the RV, my atheism, funny pictures, and pretty much anything else I can think of. I welcome all opposing views as long as you can keep it civil, my mom does come by on occasion. And, as always, the true focus of my life is my marriage to Sandra and fulfilling The Plan. Though the blog is in the top 5.
